"Satire on the 1838 New York mayoral contest, this time suggesting collusion between Whig candidate and incumbent mayor Aaron Clark and conservative Democrat Richard Riker. Here Clark sits on his stalled mare (center) as his rival Isaac L. Varian's horse makes off at left. Just visible, it trails a flag that reads "Regular Democratic Nomination! No Monopoly! Down with a monied Aristocracy!" Clark hands Riker a staff with a ram on its end, labeled "Lottery Office," urging, "Take my rod Dickey, and give her [his horse] another conservative poke, or it will be all Dickey with me!" Riker replies, "She'll go Aaron as soon as she feels her oats! If she dont I'll give her the six months!" A Jew stands at right thumbing his nose at the proceedings, "Shtop my friendsch I vill shave you shome troublesh . . . It ish moneysh vat maksh de Mare/Mayor go.!!" [LOC]

Isaac Varian became the 63rd Mayor of New York and owned the land on which 28 W 27th and much of Madison Square was built.
  • Matting & Framing Options

You can customize your print's presentation from a wide selection of frames and mats: modern or classic - all timeless. See the options here.

Our most popular style is Modern Black - Thin frame, coupled a White Mat with Black Core. The Modern White frames will match any style and are perfect for gifts. Looking for something with more bang? The gold and silver frames may be what you want. See examples here.

Mats are not offered with Gallery frames at the moment (but look great without them!).

  • Frame Sizes

All frames are custom cut and sized to match the dimensions of the image. Your final, framed print might not exactly match the dimensions listed in the Frame Size dropdown menu.

The maximum dimensions of each frame size are:

    • Keepsake: Up to 5" x 7"
    • Accent: Up to 9" x 12"
    • Spotlight: Up to 16" x 20"
    • Centerpiece: Up to 34" x 36"
    • Gallery: Up to 32" x 40"

Because of the original pixel size of the scans, not all prints are available in all sizes.

  • Shipping & Delivery

    Shipping is always free!

Prints will be scanned at the archives, and retouched by our artists to make them pixel-perfect. They will then be reprinted, trimmed, matted and framed to fit their custom sizes.

You should expect the final, framed print in 4-6 weeks. Because each print is custom researched, retouched, and framed, all sales are final.
